The Art of Cooperation

Description: Engaging youth to cooperate with is often a primary goal for adults working with or serving youth. However, this task can be complicated by youth's ongoing development and attempts at gaining increased autonomy and self-control. Research has also taught us that youth who have experienced past adverse life events may even demonstrate increased need for self-control and power leading to higher chances of power struggling with adults. This workshop will help adults gain a deeper understanding to the developmental and experiential reasons behind youth engaging in power struggles. Adults will learn key interventions for avoiding power struggles and disengaging from them when they happen. Additionally, this workshop provides relational characteristics and interactions that promote ongoing cooperation between youth and adults.
Objectives:
1. Participants will learn developmental and neurological reasons power struggles occur.
2. Participants will learn to identify key characteristics of a power struggle.
3. Participants will learn strategies to avoid and disengage from power struggles.
4. Participants will learn relational characteristics and interactions which promote cooperation
